How to Follow Your Trading Plan: Make Each Rule Checkable

By Monetizable · Updated · Based on the current product workflow

To follow a trading plan, turn each important rule into a specific action you can check before or after a session. Keep the original plan, record the decision you made and review adherence separately from P&L. Start with one repeated failure point and practise that step consistently.

Find the moment where the plan disappears

Take one recent session and locate the decision point. Did you enter before your stated condition appeared? Did you change a rule after seeing the outcome? Write the sequence in plain language: “When X happened, I did Y; my plan called for Z.” That gives you a practice target.

For example, a trader who repeatedly enters before a planned retest can practise writing the retest condition in advance and recording whether it appeared. The exercise is about observing an existing rule.

Use a three-part session loop

  1. Before: write the relevant rule, what evidence would satisfy it and what would invalidate your initial view.
  2. During: keep the original note intact and record any decision to depart from the rule with a timestamp or session note.
  3. After: compare your decision with the rule, then examine the market outcome. Choose one change to test next session.

Give a quiet session a successful ending

Some sessions offer little that fits your plan. Your review can still show that you prepared, waited and honoured the conditions you wrote. Define completion around those actions.

Monetizable gives this loop a place in daily quests and post-trade reviews. You can make a practice call, come back to the verified outcome and use your saved history to choose the next discipline exercise.
